The Ultimate Guide to Exterior House Cleaning

Updated: Jul 23

At Uinta Softwash, we understand that maintaining a clean home is essential for both aesthetic appeal and health. In this guide, we’ll walk you through our soft washing process and why it’s the best choice for your home.

Benefits of Regular House Cleaning

Improved Curb Appeal

A clean home exterior enhances the overall look of your property, increasing its value and curb appeal. Whether you’re planning to sell your home or simply want to impress your neighbors, regular cleaning makes a significant difference.

Healthier Living Environment

Removing mold, mildew, and algae from your home’s exterior helps prevent potential health issues caused by these contaminants. Regular soft washing ensures a healthier living environment for you and your family.

Prolonged Lifespan of Surfaces

By regularly removing harmful substances from your home’s exterior, you can extend the lifespan of your roofing, siding, and other surfaces. This proactive maintenance approach saves you money in the long run by reducing the need for costly repairs and replacements.

What is Soft Washing?

Soft washing is a cleaning method that uses low-pressure water combined with specialized cleaning solutions to safely and effectively remove dirt, algae, mold, and other contaminants from various surfaces. Unlike traditional pressure washing, which can damage surfaces, soft washing is gentle and safe for all types of materials, including:

  • Roofs

  • Siding

  • Brick

  • Decks

  • Patios

Mixing THE CLEANING SOLUTION

A crucial part of the soft washing process involves the careful mixing of the cleaning solution. The two main components we use are surfactants and sodium hypochlorite (SH). The ratio of these components depends heavily on the surface that's being cleaned.

What is Sodium Hypochlorite (SH)?

Sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as SH, is a powerful bleach solution that is highly effective in killing mold, mildew, algae, and other organic stains. It’s the primary cleaning agent in our soft washing solutions.

What is a Surfactant?

A surfactant is a compound that reduces the surface tension of liquids, allowing them to spread more easily and penetrate surfaces more effectively. Surfactants help our cleaning solutions adhere to surfaces, break down grime and dirt, and leave a favorable sent.

The Mixing Process

  1. Proper Ratios: Mixing SH and surfactant in the correct ratios is essential for effectiveness and safety. Typically, we use a mixture of 10-12% SH combined with a few 4-8 ounces of surfactant per gallon of solution. The exact ratios can vary depending on the surface and the level of contamination.

  2. Safety Precautions: When mixing the solution, safety top priority. Wear protective gear, including gloves and goggles, to prevent any contact with the skin or eyes. Also ensure proper ventilation and follow all safety guidelines.

  3. Surface Recommendations: Below I have included a general guide to how much SH is needed per surface. Please note that these are only general guidelines and can vary depending on how dirty the surface is.

  • Vinyl: 1-2%

  • Stucco: 2%

  • Brick: 3%

  • Barrell Tile: 3-3.5%

  • Asphalt Shingles: 4-5%

Our Soft Washing Process

Step 1: Inspection and Assessment

Before we begin, our team conducts a thorough inspection of your property. This helps us identify the specific areas that need attention, note any existing damage to the property, and determine the best approach for cleaning.

Step 2: Preparation

We take the necessary precautions to protect your property, including watering down plants, moving outdoor furniture, and covering any items that might be affected by the cleaning process.

Step 3: Application of Cleaning Solution

We apply our cleaning solution to the surface using low-pressure equipment. The surfactant ensures the solution adheres to the surface, allowing the SH to effectively break down and kill contaminants while releasing dirt and grime.

Step 4: Gentle Rinse

After allowing the solution to dwell and work its magic, we use low-pressure water to rinse away the contaminants. We also brush out any stubborn areas during this process. This step ensures that all residue is removed, leaving your surfaces like new.

Step 5: Final Inspection

Once the cleaning is complete, we conduct a final inspection to ensure every area has been properly cleaned and that you’re satisfied with the results.
